Heading into the forest to collect tree sap, he stops at the star-reading platform once used by his father Pele and remembers him. When Popo was small, a red glow appeared in the eastern sky, and his father left on a journey without telling him why. As Popo is lost in memories, one point in the forest appears distorted. It is the forbidden place called the Ruins. When Popo approaches, the Ruins begin to shine, and the Guardian's Mark his father gave him responds by giving off light. Frightened, Popo runs away. A mysterious man, Passer, appears before him and insults his father. Popo grows angry, but the forest is changing in ominous, unnatural ways. He shakes off Passer and hurries to his mother. When he reaches home, his mother has been transformed into something like a plant. She urges Popo to leave the forest and tells him that, like his father, he too is a Guardian of the Forest. Then she stops moving. Believing only his father can cure his mother, Popo leaves his home forest to search for him. Suddenly, a mysterious giant Caucasus beetle attacks. A mysterious rhinoceros beetle, Mushiking, appears, drives off the Caucasus beetle, and flies away. As if taking that beetle's place, a small talking beetle, Chibiking, appears before Popo.
