Countless comets pass through the solar system, and Earth faces an unprecedented threat: some will fall and cause devastating damage. Humanity establishes a celestial crisis-management organization and a two-stage interception system. Comet Blasters launch from comet-interception bases in satellite orbit to destroy the threats in space. Meteor Sweepers launch from ground-based extreme-high-altitude bases to intercept fragments that survive the Comet Blasters' attacks at the edge of the stratosphere.

Mikaze Honjo spends her days training as a Meteor Sweeper pilot at Okinawa's Shimojishima base. Born into a family of pilots, she entered training without questioning that path, but growing anxiety about being left behind gradually drains her motivation. One day, Mikaze and her companions receive their first meteor-interception order. Nearly crushed by the responsibility, she nevertheless succeeds. A fleeting encounter with a Comet Blaster aircraft at an altitude close to space makes the path she wishes to follow suddenly clear. Yet the comets conceal a dangerous secret unknown to the young pilots...

The X-1 and X-2 OVAs begin after Mikaze and her friends successfully intercept the giant comet Nigel 87 and return safely to Shimojishima, where ordinary training and part-time work await.
