Bamboo Background Art Collection surveys fifteen years of the animation background studio's work through approximately 500 selected images in its first collection. Science-fiction settings, everyday locations and fantasy worlds show the range of its digital background painting.
The first section examines twelve productions with more conventional background approaches: Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, Sword Art Online, Guilty Crown, Hello World, Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These, The Ancient Magus' Bride, Vinland Saga, Penguin Highway, Shirobako, A Whisker Away and The Empire of Corpses. A second section explores distinctive watercolor, ink-wash and graphic treatments through True Tears, the Layton series, Kimi ni Todoke, Hozuki's Coolheadedness, Great Pretender and The Eccentric Family.
Newly drawn work, making-of material, interviews, a studio history and written commentary explain choices of color, contrast, line and brushwork. This A4 Japanese-language volume contains 194 pages and is published by BNN.
