Do not call this an ordinary inheritance dispute. The hit film, the long-awaited continuation of the popular television drama Don’t Call It Mystery, comes to home video.

A fresh kind of mystery in which a curly-haired university student solves cases became a hit on the big screen as well. Based on Yumi Tamura’s popular manga, which had surpassed eighteen million copies in circulation, the television drama aired in January 2022 and achieved high ratings. University student Totono Kuno, whose naturally curly hair is his trademark, uses seemingly magical conversation that can be gentle one moment and piercing the next. Before anyone realises it, he has untangled the problems troubling those around him and even the mysteries of their cases. The popular drama returns as a hit film.

The film adapts the long story known as the “Hiroshima arc,” a favourite among readers of the original manga. While visiting Hiroshima, Totono becomes involved in the inheritance dispute of the distinguished Kariatsumari family, where arguments over the estate have brought deaths across generations. This new mystery, one of the largest in the series and absent from the television drama, unfolds on a scale suited to a theatrical film.

The talkative, curly-haired university student Totono Kuno is visiting Hiroshima for an art exhibition. There, he meets a high-school girl named Shioji Kariatsumari, who says she knows Garo Inudo. “Would you like a part-time job? Money and lives are at stake. I’m serious.” With those words, Shioji proposes an unusual job to Totono.

The task concerns the Kariatsumari family’s enormous inheritance. Four grandchildren of the family head are candidates to inherit: Shioji, Rikinosuke Kariatsumari, Neo Hahakabe and Yura Akamine. Together with Asaharu Kurumazaka, the grandson of the family’s legal adviser, they work to solve the mystery and claim the estate by following the instruction in the will: “Put everything that should be in each storehouse in its rightful place, with neither too much nor too little.”

But this inheritance, passed down through the generations, has a sinister history: every time it is divided, someone dies. Shioji’s father was killed eight years earlier in a car accident alongside the other candidates.

The truth hidden behind the inheritance gradually comes to light. Beneath it lie the family’s darkness and secrets, handed down from generation to generation.
