GeGeGe no Kitaro Animation

GeGeGe no Kitaro’s adventures of the 1990s come to Blu-ray. The series marked its creator’s centenary in 2022 and enjoyed renewed success with the hit film The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe. The fourth television adaptation returns in a compact archival collection.

Broadcast over a two-year period, this adaptation aimed to return to the series’ roots. Compared with its more hero-oriented predecessor, it preserves a stronger yokai atmosphere. Many supernatural creatures closely follow their original manga designs, while Nezumi Otoko’s clothing uses the same colour as in the manga for the first time. The series also places considerable emphasis on original stories.

Its later episodes adopted computer colouring in place of traditional cel animation. Combining old and new methods with ingenuity, the series holds a distinctive place in the history of modern Japanese animation.

The world is full of mysterious things. Yet humans behave as though everything belongs to them alone, doing whatever they please until they begin to threaten the territories of the yokai. The disasters recently befalling humanity are the revenge of these angered supernatural beings.

Kitaro still believes that there are many good people. Together with Neko Musume, Sunakake Baba, Konaki Jiji, Nezumi Otoko and his other companions, he continues to fight for a world where humans and yokai can coexist.
