The drama that sparked Onizuka fever across Japan makes its long-awaited Blu-ray debut. Originally broadcast from July 1998, its outrageous, convention-breaking hero became a nationwide sensation, with the final episode recording an audience rating of 35.7%.

Eikichi Onizuka is twenty-five, a former motorcycle-gang member and a graduate of a third-rate university. He imagines that becoming a high-school teacher will mean an easy life and the chance to date schoolgirls, but he fails the recruitment examination. Then an unexpected turn of events lands him a temporary teaching position at a private school. The other teachers have no patience for this selfish, trend-chasing, lecherous man who follows his instincts. Their attitude suddenly becomes friendlier when he is assigned Class 2-4: the most troublesome class in the school’s history.

Parents who cannot understand their children, teachers who will not try to understand their students, a school bound by rules, and pupils who think they already know everything the future holds: the children are losing both the joy of living and their sense of self. Perhaps what they need most is a teacher who can break through convention and open their hearts. Onizuka may fall short of every professional ideal, but he throws himself into reaching his students, however clumsily. Whether that will be enough is another question.

The drama special takes place nine months after the school occupation. Uchiyamada is now headmaster, Onizuka and Fuyutsuki have returned, and Seirin Academy is back to normal when Saint Academy, a girls’ school, asks to borrow Onizuka. He arrives brimming with confidence, only to be rejected by the students. Rika and two friends trap him into compromising photographs and threaten to show them to Fuyutsuki unless he obeys them. Just then, Fuyutsuki’s father Kenzo arrives from Hokkaido.

The box brings together the television drama and its later special, alongside the GTO compilation programme featuring cast interviews and outtakes.
