The Japanese remake of the Korean hit that inspired remakes around the world. Released in 2014, the original crime thriller follows a detective pushed to the limit after a single accident. It topped the Korean box office for five consecutive weeks, drew 3.45 million admissions and was selected for Directors' Fortnight at the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

Now remade in Japan, the story unfolds across ninety-six hours, four days at the end of the year. A detective caught in a conspiracy and the mysterious inspector chasing him collide in a story of overwhelming tension and speed, spiced with moments of comedy that will make you chuckle. An extraordinary, nerve-racking suspense entertainment brings these extreme circumstances to the screen.

On the night of December 29, with the year's end fast approaching, detective Kudo races through the rain towards his critically ill mother. His police chief calls his mobile phone: “A weekly magazine has received an allegation that our station has been running a slush fund. You aren't involved, are you?” Kudo feels the blood drain from his face. This is bad. He manages to brush off the chief's probing questions, but his mind is filled with panic.

Then his wife calls to tell him that his mother has died. He is speechless. At that moment, his car strikes a man who appears in front of him. Realising the man is already dead, Kudo panics, bundles the body into the boot and drives away.

He encounters a checkpoint along the way, but somehow talks his way through and reaches the police station. Desperately denying any involvement in the slush fund, he leaves again. At his mother's funeral venue, he does the unthinkable: he places the body of the man he hit inside his mother's coffin, hoping to have it cremated together with her.

Then a message arrives on Kudo's phone: “You killed someone. I know.” He is so shocked that his legs almost give way. Another message follows: “Where did you put the body? Tell me.” Could someone have seen him that night?

The sender is Yazaki, an inspector at prefectural police headquarters. He, too, is shaken by the discovery that a man who had gone missing was dead. That man is the very person Kudo struck with his car. Behind it all lies a secret Yazaki must never allow anyone around him to discover.

Kudo is pursued; Yazaki pursues him. How will this unprecedented ninety-six-hour escape end? And what shocking truth is concealed in the dead man's body?
