Something is wrong with this country town.

Taro Mima, played by Tomoya Nakamura, is a mystery writer on the brink. Five years earlier he won the Akechi Kogoro Award and left his company to concentrate on writing. Since then, each new book has had its first-print run reduced, and online reviews have been merciless. Despite encouragement from his editor, Hiroshi Nakayamada, played by Koji Yamamoto, he struggles to write.

One day, Taro visits the mountain settlement of Hayabusa to check on the house inherited from his late father and left unattended. Captivated by its rich natural surroundings, he decides to move there. Soon after beginning his new life, a neighboring man his own age, Kansuke Fujimoto, played by Shinnosuke Mitsushima, invites him to a local drinking gathering. There he meets Kensaku Yamahara, played by Katsuhisa Namase, Ikuo Miyahara, played by Jun Hashimoto, Yosuke Morino, played by Zen Kajiwara, and Shogo Tokuda, played by Takashi Okabe, who encourage him to join the volunteer fire brigade.

Weak and inexperienced in sports, Taro initially declines because it seems entirely unsuitable for him. Immediately afterward, a fire breaks out at the home of resident Shizuo Namikawa, played by Baku Owada. Seeing the brigade's desperate firefighting efforts, Taro decides to join, wanting to protect Hayabusa, his new home.

But suspicious fires have already occurred in the district that year; this is the third, and the brigade suspects serial arson. Could an arsonist really be hiding in peaceful Hayabusa? Before Taro can overcome his alarm, resident Hiroki Yamahara, played by Wataru Ichinose, disappears.

Meanwhile, Taro meets Aya Tachiki, played by Haruna Kawaguchi, in Hayabusa's only tavern after first seeing her at the cemetery when visiting his father's grave. The mysterious woman intrigues him. As Taro gradually settles into Hayabusa, solar-power company Luminous Solar's salesman Akimitsu Manabe, played by Yuta Furukawa, watches him with a piercing gaze...
