Hisashi Eguchi Complete Manga Cover Art Collection assembles chapter-opening illustrations from across nearly all of the artist's manga work. Images from Susume Pirates, Stop!! Hibari-kun! and Age are joined by work from Paparinko, Lucky Strike and Irregular, tracing the development of his illustration style.
These opening pages became a place to experiment independently of the story that followed. Inspired by manga frontispieces and the illustrators he encountered in magazines, Eguchi explored monochrome tonal contrast, line-only drawing, brushwork resembling woodcuts and screentone effects such as the shadow of glasses, as well as coloured screentones.
The collection shows how that experimental space helped shape his later identity as an illustrator. Published by Shogakukan, this Japanese-language volume contains 354 pages.
