Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut Animation

In this coming-of-age space fantasy, humanity’s first cosmonaut is a vampire girl. Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut adapts Keisuke Makino’s novel, ranked fourth in the paperback category of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2018, with Megumi Hayashibara leading the cast as Irina. Her performance marked a return to a leading late-night television-anime role after several years.

After the end of a world war, the world’s two rival superpowers—the eastern Zirnitra Republics Federation and the western United Kingdom of Arnack—turn their territorial ambitions towards space. Their development race grows fierce. In Eastern Year 1960, Supreme Leader Gergiev announces Project Mechta, or Dream, a programme that would achieve humanity’s first crewed spaceflight.

Reserve cosmonaut trainee Lev Leps receives a top-secret assignment: Project Nosferatu will send a vampire into space as an experiment before a human flight. Lev must watch the test subject, Irina Luminesk, around the clock and train her for the mission. Human and vampire, observer and experimental subject, the pair are buffeted by barriers between their peoples and the ambitions of their nations. Yet they share a pure longing for space and begin reaching for that future together.

Makino also shapes the anime’s series composition, bringing experience from work including Persona 5, whose release introduction cited 2.7 million worldwide sales, and the film HiGH&LOW The Red Rain. Composer Yasunori Mitsuda, celebrated for game scores including Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, gives the story an expansive musical world. Japanese broadcasts began in October 2021 on TV Tokyo, BS Nippon TV, Sun TV and KBS Kyoto, with ALI PROJECT’s Scarlet Moon as the opening theme and Chima’s An Ordinary Someday as the ending theme.

Part 1 combines the first six episodes with a CD of six audio dramas previously distributed as digital-purchase extras, now included as physical recordings. A newly written short story by Makino and a colour booklet accompany new storage-box artwork by Hiromi Kato and inner-jacket artwork by Karei. Supplementary features include the AnimeJapan 2021 stage digest, a recap through episode six, clean opening and ending videos, trailers and commercials, and a commentary on episode six.
