Isabeau is the first production in the Musicals of Japan Origin project, also known as MOJO, launched by Watanabe Entertainment and playwright Kenichi Suemitsu with the aim of creating original Japanese musicals that can stand on the world stage. This new original musical brings together a cast of international calibre led by Futo Nozomi and some of Japan’s leading creative talent.

On that day, France fell—by the hand of its worst queen.

It is the era of the Hundred Years’ War. A girl born as the daughter of the Duke of Bavaria eventually becomes Isabeau de Bavière, queen of neighbouring France. Her husband, Charles VI, loves Isabeau deeply, but a certain incident sends him into madness.

Charles VI’s uncle, Philip, Duke of Burgundy, and his son John seek to exploit the fractured monarchy and seize power. Opposing them is Charles VI’s brother, Louis, Duke of Orléans, who enters into an adulterous relationship with Isabeau and helps her acquire power.

In an age of chaos, Isabeau strives to survive by following her love and impulses. Charles VII, who will later become the fifth king of France’s Valois dynasty, traces the life of his own mother, Isabeau, together with his mother-in-law, Yolande of Aragon.

They follow the path taken by the worst and most hated queen in the history of France.
