Japan's Worst Man: My Family Was Fake Blu-ray Box

Shingo Katori returns to a leading role in a Fuji Television drama series after eleven years as a man who dislikes families and children but decides to use both to rebuild his public image. Japan’s Worst Man: My Family Was Fake mixes electioneering with an improvised household, following a cynical scheme that gradually becomes a genuine commitment to family and social change.

Former television news producer Ippei Omori has been pushed out of his job by a scandal. He moves into the home left by his father and calls himself a freelance political journalist, although his life is effectively unemployed and directionless. His childhood friend Kojiro Makabe, the second publicly funded secretary to Diet member Tetsuo Kuroiwa, suggests a move into politics. Hoping to win the next ward-assembly election, Ippei invites his brother-in-law Shosuke Ohara and Shosuke’s two children to live with him. The widowed father works in childcare, while Ippei sees housework and parenting as a way to demonstrate that he understands ordinary voters. Behind the apparently generous invitation lies a thoroughly self-serving plan.

Jun Shison plays a single father for the first time, making the kind-hearted Shosuke a pointed contrast to Katori’s protagonist. The cast also includes Ai Tominaga, Risa Masuda, Sojiro Chiba, Yuka Kouri, Reo Sano, Jun Hashimoto and Ken Yasuda. The original screenplay brings together Yosuke Masaike, recognised for Anime Supremacy! at the Japan Academy Film Prize; Naomi Hiruta, whose The Great Passage television adaptation received a Tokyo Drama Award in 2024; and Satoko Okazaki of Even If You Don’t Do It. Masaike, Hiruta and Okazaki write the family-drama strand, while Hiruta and Tetsuya Oishi handle the election story.

Music is by yuma Yamaguchi, and Katori performs the theme song “Circus Funk (feat. Chevon).” Taku Kitano produces with cooperating producer Hana Song. Takuro Oikawa, Makito Murakami and Masaki Tanimura direct, with production cooperation from Telepack for Fuji Television.

The box contains all eleven episodes: episodes 1–3 on disc one, 4–7 on disc two and 8–11 on disc three. The fourth disc holds approximately 68 minutes of extras, including a Shingo Katori interview, filming-start and wrap-up footage, the original side story Hello Again and promotional spots.
