Beyond the Horizon presents John Harris's science-fiction painting in his first Japanese-language art collection. Book-cover work and preliminary drawings include images made for John Scalzi and Ben Bova, with further examples associated with Jack McDevitt and Orson Scott Card. Scalzi also contributes the foreword.
The thematic sections move from immense floating forms and dust-filled landscapes to visions of Earth, obscured suns, burning cities, wilderness and crystalline terrain. Works are also grouped by author, with a catalogue of the included images.
Beyond the novel illustrations, a series inspired by NASA's image archives approaches the boundary between satellite imagery and abstract painting. Another long-running project builds the story and culture of an imagined city over more than thirty years. Translated by Yoko Horiguchi and published by Graphic-sha, this Japanese-language volume contains 160 pages.
