Kinokoinu Blu-ray Volume 2

Time spent with the ones you love is sure to become even more precious. A warm, gentle animated story with a touch of mystery.

The long-awaited Kinokoinu comes to Blu-ray! Adapted from Kimama Aoboshi’s manga, published in Tokuma Shoten’s Comic Ryu and with over 1.75 million copies in circulation, the television anime tells of picture-book author Hotaru Yuyami and a strange creature he discovers in his garden. As he watches a pink mushroom, it suddenly begins to move: it is Kinokoinu, a mysterious creature with a mushroom for one ear. Though it does whatever it pleases, it can also offer quiet support. Their amusing days, and the inexplicable mysteries surrounding Kinokoinu, create a slightly unusual everyday fantasy in which simply being together feels good.

The animation comes from C-Station, the studio behind Laid-Back Camp, whose Blu-ray and DVD releases have sold over 100,000 copies and whose film earned one billion yen at the box office. Careful drawings and thoughtful character acting create a film that is both gentle and deeply grounded. A wealth of bonus footage makes this a release to enjoy and keep close for years to come.

Rare archive footage revisits the advance-screening event through Kinokoinu Playback. Whether you missed it at the time or wish to revisit it, you can continue to enjoy these moments.

One day, picture-book author Hotaru Yuyami notices a bright pink mushroom growing beneath the bridal-wreath shrub in his garden. As he idly watches, it suddenly moves! It wags its tail like a dog, but is it a mushroom? Puzzled, Hotaru decides to live with the mysterious creature, Kinokoinu.

Then it draws where it should not, and always wants to eat every last one of its beloved takoyaki. Hotaru’s childhood friend and editor Komako, Yara from the mushroom research institute and others become involved in amusing days with Kinokoinu, who is utterly carefree yet can quietly come to their aid. A warm, gently mysterious animation about Kinokoinu, Hotaru and everyone around them, whose days somehow feel happier when they are together.
