Koi wa Hikari Blu-ray with Bonus DVD
映画 恋は光
Love is something anyone can talk about, yet something no one can describe correctly.
What would happen to a love story if the feeling of being in love became visible? The film adapts Akieda's manga of the same name, serialised in Shueisha's Ultra Jump from 2013 to 2017 and collected in book form. It depicts the first love of a male university student with the unusual ability to see women in love emit a sparkling light. With warm empathy for its characters, this philosophical romance explores their attempts to define love and to ask what being in love really means.
Fuju Kamio, who drew attention in acclaimed productions including Mr. Hiiragi's Homeroom, broadcast on NTV in 2019, and HiGH&LOW THE WORST from 2019, plays Saijo. His unusual ability to see women in love shine has led him to keep his distance from romance. Nanase Nishino plays the heroine Kitashiro, who has long loved Saijo but cannot escape the position of childhood friend. Nishino has demonstrated striking success in numerous works including Your Turn to Kill, broadcast on NTV in 2019, and Last of the Wolves from 2021.
Yuna Taira plays Shinonome, who, like Saijo, has no romantic experience and studies the nature of love. Fumika Baba plays Yadorigi, who habitually wants to take other women's boyfriends but truly wishes to fall in love honestly. As the four consider the definition of love, they gradually enter an unusual four-sided relationship; each person's romantic future is another focus of the story.
Keiichi Kobayashi writes and directs. His beautiful imagery in About the Pink Sky, released in 2013, and He Won't Kill, She Won't Die, released in 2019, has been highly praised in Japan and abroad. Picturesque locations filled with atmosphere capture the mood of the original manga.
Story: Saijo is a university student whose unusual constitution lets him see women in love shining. While leading a student life with no connection to romance, he meets a bookish young woman, Shinonome, who says she wants to understand love, and falls for her at first sight. They begin an exchange diary through which they discuss its definition. Their growing closeness unsettles Kitashiro, his childhood friend, who has long held an unrequited love for him. Yadorigi, who repeatedly steals other people's partners, mistakes Saijo for Kitashiro's boyfriend and begins an energetic pursuit. Before they realise it, all four are considering what love is and forming a curious four-sided relationship. Can they unravel the mystery of love that has troubled humanity for thousands of years? Where will each person's love lead?
