This prehistory of Macross depicts the struggle over the ruins of the Protoculture. In 1999, an alien space battleship crashes on Earth and the Earth Unification War breaks out over it. Eight years later, the Bird Human finally awakens!

The main feature is revived at the highest quality through the latest upconversion technology. Action scenes introducing full-scale 3D CG to the series for the first time, together with Roy Fokker's appearance, offer highlights that fans will find irresistible. In addition to the bonus material from the previous Blu-ray box, the release includes newly recorded audio commentary. Video extras include Macross Zero Zero and voice artist comments, while the earlier box's audio commentary is also included.

Chapter One, The Ocean and the Wind: In 1999, the Earth Unification War breaks out over an alien space battleship that crashes on Earth. Eight years pass. An abnormal energy reaction is detected on Mayan Island, an isolated island in the southern seas where the legend of the Bird Human survives. It is thought to be Protoculture, a legacy of advanced technology left by aliens long ago. Both the UN Forces and the Anti-UN Forces begin their invasion in a struggle over it. Amid this conflict, UN Forces pilot Shin Kudo is shot down by an enemy aircraft and stranded alone on Mayan Island, where he meets the young priestess Sara.

Chapter Two, The Star on the Ground: Shin spends a peaceful time on the isolated southern island of Mayan. One day, he encounters a battle between enemy variable fighters and those of the UN Forces. As Shin heads to rescue Sara's younger sister Mao, a UN Forces VF-0 variable fighter makes an emergency landing before his eyes.

Chapter Three, The Blue and Desperate Battle: The Anti-UN Alliance sends out its SV-51s to seize the Protoculture ruins recovered by the UN Forces. The UN Forces deploy Reactive Armored Valkyries and Destroids in response, and a fierce battle unfolds at sea. Before long, the flames of war reach Mayan Island itself.

Chapter Four, Jungle: Captured by the Anti-UN Alliance's Nora unit, Shin, Sara and Aries hear the legend of the Bird Human from Dr. Hasford, the mastermind behind the alliance. Meanwhile, in the skies above Mayan Island, Roy Fokker in his VF-0S and the Anti-UN Alliance pilot Ivanov fight another fateful duel. Amid swirling conspiracies and fierce fighting, the Protoculture relic that holds the key to their fate, the Bird Human, begins to awaken.

Final Chapter, Bird Human: Bombardment by the Anti-UN Alliance turns Mayan Island into a sea of flames. The chain of hatred and sorrow caused by the fighting finally awakens the Bird Human, which absorbs Sara herself and moves to purify Earth. Faced with its overwhelming destructive power, both the UN Forces and the Anti-UN Alliance are helpless. Shin, meanwhile, launches in a booster-equipped VF-0 to rescue Sara. A fierce three-way battle unfolds on a grand scale. What exactly is the Bird Human? All the events intersect, mingle, and then...
