Beyond the Time brings together the surviving design material and complete storyboards for Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack in a three-book reference set. The design volume goes beyond approved final sheets to include original proposals, material produced during development and previously unpublished rough ideas, including drawings by Mamoru Nagano.

The two storyboard volumes reproduce Yoshiyuki Tomino's boards for the film across 800 pages, giving a different view of its staging and progression from that offered by the design archive. The production specification describes one full-colour design book and two monochrome storyboard books in A4 format.

All three Japanese-language volumes fit into a slipcase illustrated by Yutaka Izubuchi with Nu Gundam and Sazabi. The presentation was designed both to preserve the reference material and to make the books practical to consult.
