Based on the bestselling essay collections Ninety Years Old: So What? and Ninety-Eight Years Old: The Battle Never Ends, the Day Never Sets by the Naoki Prize-winning author renowned for her frank way of speaking, this is a spirited entertainment filled with laughter and relatable moments for audiences of all ages.
Ninety-year-old writer Aiko Sato has announced that she is giving up writing. She spends her gloomy days idly looking at newspapers and television. Her daughter Kyoko and granddaughter Momoko, who live upstairs in the same house, cannot understand her loneliness.
Meanwhile, Shinya Yoshikawa, a middle-aged editor at a major publishing house, finds himself suspended after his old-fashioned Showa-era way of communicating is criticised as workplace bullying and sexual harassment. His wife and daughter have also lost patience with him, leaving him frustrated in both his professional and personal life.
One day, Yoshikawa's editorial department proposes a new series of essays by Aiko. He succeeds in persuading her to take it on and becomes her editor! Could this encounter open up a new life for them both?
