The World of Kusogai Zakkaten gathers Noriko Nishimura's imagined towns in the painter's first art collection. Previously unpublished images and paintings made before the shop began appear alongside recent work.
Its settings range from sky, night, sea, forest and land-based towns to food-inspired places, imaginary cities and rooms. Among them are a town whose transport takes the form of flying fish, a northern snowfield where Christmas-tree towns grow, and an entirely blue city discovered in a book within the Kingdom of Forgotten Books. A turquoise-and-coral fairy settlement and an ancient civilization shaped around the sun add further worlds to explore.
A making-of feature and extended interview close the collection. The project brings together sisters Noriko Nishimura, who paints the towns by hand, and Yuki Nishimura, who adapts them into designs. Published by Genkosha, this Japanese-language edition contains 160 pages.
