Tragedy is often absurd, but never had the word “absurd” described a tragedy so perfectly.

On that day, a section of the city collapsed to the earth, taking many lives with it.

Sex, age, character, social standing, wealth...

No distinction was made between the victims. The sole fact that they happened to be there was what took their lives.

Why did they have to die?

What meaning was there in those countless deaths?

There was no answer. Those left behind received only a vague, shapeless sense of loss.

This tragedy would later be called the Great Collapse, “Gran Forte.”

Ever since, a rain of absurdity has shrouded the city of Novus Aither.

From the upper levels to the lower levels, the water soaking the city flows downward, eventually collecting and stagnating in the Prison.

Unable to find any way of removing the rising filthy water, the prisoners can only struggle for breath.

Eustia Astraea

Voiced by Yoshino Nanjo.

A girl suffering from the “Wing Disease,” an illness that causes wings to grow from her back. Certain circumstances lead the protagonist to take her in.

With neither birth parents nor foster parents, she has been made to work as a lowly servant since her earliest memories.

Despite her difficult life, her bright, cheerful nature puts the people around her at ease. In the protagonist's words, she is a woman with a whole field of sunflowers growing in her head.

Her past experience has made her proficient at all kinds of housework. Eris, who had been looking after the protagonist on her own, regards her as an enemy.

Eris Floralia

Voiced by Yu Asakawa.

A woman whom the protagonist bought out of a brothel just before she became a prostitute.

She works as a doctor in the brothel district, and the prostitutes hold her skills in high regard. She personally insists, however, that medicine is her sideline and her real occupation is being the protagonist's wife.

Unfortunately, she is sorely lacking in affection for her patients and in housekeeping skills.

She is dry and dislikes making an effort, yet has an extraordinary passion for treating the protagonist's injuries.

Words must be chosen carefully around her: if told to die, she might actually do so.

The protagonist says she is a woman who should treat her own head first.

Buying someone out means paying a large sum of money to a brothel owner to secure a prostitute's release.

Saint Irene

Voiced by Tae Okajima.

The twenty-ninth Saint Irene. She keeps Novus Aither suspended in the sky through the power of prayer, replacing the previous saint, who was executed to take responsibility for the Great Collapse.

She very rarely appears before the public. It is said that she devotes her life to prayer in a sanctuary deep within the cathedral.

Having lost her sight, she is called the “Blind Saint” and enjoys immense popularity among the people.

Only a very small number of people know her personality. She is pure and logical, but her cynical way of speaking often makes her seem harsh.

Blood type A; height 155.3 cm; weight 42.7 kg.

Licia de Novus Yurii

Voiced by Eriko Nakamura.

The royal family's first princess and first in line to the throne.

Her father, the reigning king, is bedridden with illness, so she conducts affairs of state in his place.

Some nobles apparently mock her as the “Uncrowned Queen,” since her coronation has not yet taken place. She herself seems entirely unconcerned.

She is clear-minded and full of energy, though her privileged upbringing may explain why she is sometimes easily hurt.

For a member of the royal family, she shows a strong interest in ordinary life. She annoys her servants by taking tasks such as cooking and sewing away from them.
