Introduction

A candle for each year of her age flickers on the cake. Today is a little girl's birthday. Her father, usually absent because he is busy at work, is home for this one day. For the girl, having the three members of her family together for the first time in a while is even more exciting than her birthday itself.

“Happy birthday.” With a small, delighted smile, the girl opens the gift box.

Yumetaro was walking through a shop's stuffed-toy department when the girl's father arrived, led there by a shop assistant as he looked for a present. Startled, Yumetaro hid in a pile of stuffed toys: a whole stack of pink toys that looked just like him.

Her father stopped right there—and picked Yumetaro up. Continuing to pretend to be a stuffed toy, Yumetaro was placed in a box tied with a ribbon and brought all the way to the girl's house.

The girl loved Yumetaro. When she carried him back to her room, eyes watched her. She lavished so much affection on Yumetaro that the stuffed toys she had received, one each year, could not help worrying that she might never love them again.

One night, the stuffed toys suddenly came to life and carried the girl away into another dimension. Left alone on top of a chest of drawers, Yumetaro went into the dimension where they had gone to search for her.
