Puella Magi Madoka Magica Animation

Bring home Puella Magi Madoka Magica with ultra-detailed imagery upconverted to 4K HDR and a new cinematic sound experience.

“Make a contract with me and become a magical girl.” A story of magical girls born from wishes is woven anew. First broadcast as a television series in January 2011, Puella Magi Madoka Magica became a major sensation and went on to a nationwide theatrical release.

The adorable everyday lives of its girls, unpredictable and thrilling developments, and a world inhabited by ordinary girls and magical girls captivated audiences. Expressive animation, avant-garde visions of otherworldly spaces and dramatic background music brought this story wide acclaim across many fields.

The first Blu-ray volume released after the television broadcast sold 53,000 copies in its first week, setting a record in the history of television anime; the second volume then surpassed that record. Its major honours included the television award at the 16th Animation Kobe Awards; awards in 14 categories at the Newtype Anime Awards; the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2012 and 11th Tokyo Anime Awards; the first Nikkan Sports Anime Grand Prix; and the Animation Division Grand Prize at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival. It shone as one of the defining works of 2011.

The twelve television episodes were re-edited into two theatrical films, Beginnings and Eternal, released nationwide in Japan on October 6 and October 13, 2012 respectively. For viewers of the television series, they offer a chance to relive its emotional impact. For newcomers, they bring together the essence of Puella Magi Madoka Magica in a concentrated form.

“Now, Madoka Kaname—what will you wish for, in exchange for your soul?” The girls’ battle begins again.

Have the magical girls been saved from despair? Guided by the Law of Cycles, a new story begins. Madoka Kaname was once an ordinary girl enjoying happy days. By staking her own existence, she freed all magical girls from a cruel chain of fate.

Left behind with her feelings for Madoka unfulfilled, the magical girl Homura Akemi continues fighting alone in the world Madoka left behind. “Dreaming of seeing that familiar smile again...”

Following the two films based on the television series, the long-awaited Rebellion arrives with an entirely new script and animation. Madoka Kaname changed the world. In the world that follows, will magical girls see hope—or despair?
