A new terrifying masterpiece is born! A girl's spirit awakens anger, and a fierce tale of revenge begins.
With more than 200,000 copies in circulation, the popular horror manga Sayuri, hailed by fans as a terrifying masterpiece, finally becomes a live-action film. Its bold storytelling follows the tone and conventions established by Japanese horror while breaking through that framework to unleash a wildly unexpected world.
The Kamiki family moves into its dream home, only to face one inexplicable phenomenon after another. “There is something in this house.” Plunging them into terror is Sayuri, the spirit of a girl who inhabits the house and is the source of its curse. What begins as familiar Japanese horror takes a staggering, unexpected turn. Terrifying, entertaining and emotionally stirring, this fusion of horror manga and cinema creates a new entertainment masterpiece that awakens Japan's horror tradition.
The Kamiki family has moved into its dream home: a second-hand house in the suburbs purchased by the father, Akio. Keiko, their cheerful high-school daughter, is delighted to have her own room. Norio, their eldest son in his third year of junior high school, gazes at the view from the balcony, excited about their new life. Only his younger brother Shun, a timid fifth-grader, senses something and feels uneasy.
The grandparents, Shozo and Harue, who previously lived separately, also move in. Harue's dementia has advanced: soon after arriving, she confuses Keiko with her mother, Masako, and keeps staring at a particular spot.
At school, Norio is bewildered when Sumida, a girl from the neighbouring class whom he has never met, suddenly tells him, “Be careful.” She seems to have a psychic sensitivity.
Then senseless incidents strike the family. Keiko, ordinarily devoted to her younger brother, attacks Shun. The next day, Akio dies, followed, as if in a chain reaction, by Shozo.
Worried about Norio's prolonged absence from school, Sumida visits and warns him: “Get out of that house, quickly! If you don't, everyone…” Just as she predicts, Norio witnesses his brother, sister and mother die mysteriously, one after another.
Cornered and panicking, Norio hides beneath a table. A mysterious girl approaches with an eerie laugh. The person who appears to rescue him is Grandma Harue, whom he had believed utterly senile.
“So it wasn't a dream. I'm wide awake now. Have they all died?”
“Was that thing I kept glimpsing responsible for all of it?”
Rousing the despairing Norio, she asks, “What can those of us left behind do?” Then she roars: “Listen! The two of us are sending that thing to hell! Revenge!!!!”
A making-of feature, event footage and an audio commentary offer further perspectives on the film.
