GODZILLA Movies

Shin Godzilla: Ortho, the monochrome version of Shin Godzilla, arrives on Blu-ray. The original film was written and overseen by Hideaki Anno, with Shinji Higuchi directing the film and its special effects.

Released in 2016, Shin Godzilla became a major hit with box-office earnings exceeding 8.2 billion yen. It also won seven awards, including Best Film, at the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize. Now this large-scale work has been reborn in black and white as Shin Godzilla: Ortho.

The monochrome version was first shown on October 27, 2023, at the fourth Takashi Yamazaki Selection Godzilla screening, held to celebrate the release of Godzilla Minus One. After being invited to appear as a guest, Hideaki Anno proposed the project. It became a reality under the supervision of Shinji Higuchi and associate director Katsuro Onoue.

“Orthochromatic” refers to a type of black-and-white film that does not respond to red tones. It is also shortened to “ortho”. Compared with the panchromatic monochrome film most commonly used today, it renders faces with a darker, weightier tone. This was the texture the production aimed to recreate, and it inspired the title.

After a limited theatrical run, this version is finally available on disc.

Special features explain how the original film was transformed into a monochrome version with orthochromatic film in mind. They also include the talk-show conversation between Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki and Hideaki Anno that prompted the project. The conversation, also featured among the Godzilla Minus One extras, is included here as well. Rare footage such as the original Shin Godzilla theatrical trailer remade in the Ortho monochrome style completes the bonus material.
