The Boy and the Heron Animation

A worldwide hit and a long-awaited new theatrical work: The Boy and the Heron presents an apocalyptic vision.

Ten years have passed. The long-awaited return to the cinema became the focus of entertainment discussion through an unusual approach: publicity built around doing no publicity. “I wanted to return to the origins of cinema.” That approach heightened anticipation for the film.

A worldwide box-office success, the film won numerous awards and achieved milestones for Japanese animation. It received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, the Animated Film award at the 77th British Academy Film Awards, and the Best Animated Motion Picture award at the 81st Golden Globe Awards.

In Japan, box-office revenue exceeded 9.3 billion yen, with approximately 6.26 million admissions. In North America, it opened in 2,205 cinemas and debuted at number one, setting a new box-office record for a Studio Ghibli film. It was also a major success in France, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Taiwan and other territories. In China, opening revenue of approximately 2.1 billion yen set a new record for Japanese animation. These figures reflect the source’s report as of April 3, 2024.

The edition includes the complete storyboards and a special presentation of the film’s creative world. Explore the storyboards alongside the film through picture-in-picture viewing, an interview with Joe Hisaishi, a trailer collection, short films made for social-media promotion, and the dubbing script.
