The Eminence in Shadow Animation

An unbeatable protagonist, overwhelming chūnibyō fantasies, and a serious comedy of misunderstandings! The popular series, with more than two million copies in circulation, comes to television anime.

Based on the hugely popular light novel The Eminence in Shadow, the story follows a boy who admires the hidden power behind the scenes: someone who is neither the protagonist nor the final boss, who normally conceals his strength and blends into the crowd, intervening in the story from the shadows to reveal his abilities in secret. Living inconspicuously while training every day, he is reincarnated in another world! The anime, which began airing in October 2022, depicts the serious yet comic exploits of a protagonist who secretly works to defeat a “dark cult” he invented in his imagination, and of the organisation he leads, Shadow Garden.

Reborn as Cid Kagenou, the boy who dreamed of being an eminence in shadow appears in public as the unremarkable second child of a rural baron, while secretly acting as Shadow, the leader of Shadow Garden. Alpha, the first seat of the Seven Shadows, is a blonde, blue-eyed elf and an all-round prodigy. Beta, the second seat, is a silver-haired, blue-eyed elf who regards Shadow with awe. Gamma, the third seat, possesses an outstanding intellect, while Delta, the fourth, has exceptional combat strength.

An “eminence in shadow” is neither the protagonist nor the final boss. It is someone who normally hides their abilities and plays the part of an ordinary background character, secretly intervening in events to demonstrate their strength from behind the scenes. A boy who yearned for that role trained in pursuit of power while living an inconspicuous life, until an accident took his life and he was reborn in another world.

Reincarnated as Cid Kagenou, he seizes the opportunity to enjoy playing the eminence in shadow in this new world. While secretly working, for fun, to defeat a “dark cult” he invented in his imagination, he discovers that the cult seems to exist for real...?

The girls he casually took under his command misunderstand his intentions and come to worship him. Without realising it himself, he becomes a genuine eminence in shadow. And Shadow Garden, the organisation of shadows led by Cid, will eventually destroy the darkness of the world. An unbeatable protagonist, overwhelming chūnibyō fantasies, and a serious comedy of misunderstandings: the popular series with more than two million copies in circulation comes to television anime!

Bonus video includes the chibi-character anime Kagejitsu!, the second version of the creditless opening, promotional-video and commercial collections, and web previews in both normal and special versions.
