The Makioka Sisters (Sasameyuki) Blu-ray

In spring 1938, as the threat of war spreads across Japan, the once-prosperous Makioka family of Osaka's Semba district approaches the end of an era. Its four sisters preserve an elegant way of life even as their household's fortunes decline. Marriage arrangements for the third sister become the thread connecting a year of changing relationships, family expectations and the passing seasons.

Kon Ichikawa adapts Junichiro Tanizaki's novel in this 1983 film made for Toho's fiftieth anniversary. Ryoko Sakuma, Sayuri Yoshinaga and Yuko Kotegawa star alongside Juzo Itami and Koji Ishizaka, with a special appearance by Keiko Kishi. Ichikawa and Shinya Hidaka wrote the screenplay; Shinnosuke Okawa and Toshiyuki Watanabe composed the music, and Tomoyuki Tanaka and Ichikawa produced the film.

The Blu-ray contains the 140-minute feature in colour with its original Japanese Linear PCM mono soundtrack and Japanese subtitles. Approximately 44 minutes of supplementary material includes the production-news teaser, theatrical trailer, Kon Ichikawa discussing kimono, his reflections on The Makioka Sisters, and a still-image gallery.
