Uncle from Another World Anime

Uncle, back from another world, tells stories of blood, tears and sometimes games. With cumulative circulation exceeding two million copies at the time of the release announcement, Hotondoshindeiru's manga, serialised on Web Comic Apanta, becomes a television anime from July 2022. This is Blu-ray volume 1.

After seventeen years in a coma, Uncle wakes up and begins speaking an incomprehensible language, claiming to have returned from another world. His nephew Takafumi visits him in hospital and initially thinks that Uncle has lost his mind. Then Uncle demonstrates magic: proof that his impossible story is true.

The original three-volume Blu-ray and DVD release announced outer cases newly illustrated by Hotondoshindeiru, digipaks newly illustrated by Kazuhiro Ota, and special booklets containing newly drawn manga by Hotondoshindeiru. These were first-press inclusions. The exact-edition retailer marks them as no longer available, so the current listing excludes them rather than promising them as included.

Volume 1 contains episodes 1–4. Regular extras comprise an episode 1 audio commentary with Takehito Koyasu, Jun Fukuyama and Haruka Tomatsu; an episode 2 commentary with Takehito Koyasu, Jun Fukuyama and Mikako Komatsu; the creditless opening and ending; web previews for episodes 2–4; and Uncle from Another World Channel Part 1, featuring Takehito Koyasu and Jun Fukuyama. The channel feature is a re-edited version of the programme broadcast on AT-X on June 29, 2022. Commentaries are supplementary tracks, separate from the main episodes.

Autumn 2017. Uncle was hit by a truck at seventeen, then spent seventeen years in a coma. Now thirty-four, he has awakened. When Takafumi visits him in hospital, Uncle speaks nonsense and says that he has returned from another world, Granbahamal. Takafumi thinks, 'Uncle has gone crazy.' But Uncle proves his story by showing him magic. Takafumi decides to earn a living by monetising these magical abilities and takes in Uncle, who has no other family, to share his room.

Uncle tells stories of his adventures and overflows with love for SEGA games. Takafumi alternates between delight and pain as he hears about the lonely, harsh half of Uncle's life. Two men from different generations live together, working through video streaming in a corner of public housing. A new otherworld comedy begins.
