Yourness weaves songs and lyrics like scenes from a film or a story on its second mini album, VII. Guided by composer, guitarist and programmer Shohei Koga, the seven-song release explores the different meanings attached to the number seven, with time and water forming a secondary theme. Dark sounds carry its reflections on life and existence.
Yuji Kurokawa's expressive vocals stand at the center of the band's expansive, emotional sound. Koga's guitar is joined by technically intricate playing from bassist Yudai Tanaka and drummer Takahiro Ono. Other tracks introduce bit sounds with a 2.5-dimensional feel, or electro-swing textures marked by saxophone and acoustic bass.
On ECG, guest vocalist RINO joins Kurokawa for Yourness's first English-language song. These new approaches give each piece its own character, ranging so widely that they can seem to come from different artists, while retaining the care and completeness of the individual songs.
