35 Nenme no Love Letter Blu-ray
映画 35年目のラブレター
That letter was the fullest expression of his love. A heartwarming true story follows a husband unable to read or write and the wife who taught him happiness.
Tamotsu Nishihata grew up without literacy after a harsh childhood. His dependable wife, Kyoko, continued to support him, and the two lived closely and happily together. Upon retiring, Tamotsu decided to write a love letter thanking his beloved wife for everything she had done. Already over sixty, he began a long struggle to learn.
This is the real story of the Nishihatas. Tamotsu's steady attendance at night junior high school and his efforts to learn letters from the beginning were covered by many media outlets and even inspired an original rakugo story. His love letter prompted a film adaptation. From their first meeting and marriage through the discovery of his secret, their journey unfolds with warmth. The feelings he puts into each painstakingly written letter create a tender story of an otherwise ordinary couple, bringing both laughter and tears.
"Were you happy marrying me?" Tamotsu Nishihata is sixty-five and cannot read or write. His beloved wife Kyoko is always beside him. Born into poverty, he grew up with very little schooling. Life was difficult until a fateful meeting with Kyoko led to their happy marriage. Because he could not bear to lose that happiness, he was unable to tell her about his illiteracy.
Six months later, his carefully hidden secret finally came to light. Tamotsu prepared himself for separation, but Kyoko took his hand and told him, "From today, I will be your hands." Her words and the look in her eyes saved him.
He wants to write a love letter expressing his gratitude to the wife who has always stayed beside him and supported him. Retirement gives him the resolve to start attending night junior high school. Learning is difficult at his age, and before he realizes it, more than five years have passed. As Tamotsu earnestly writes, erases and writes again, letter by letter, and Kyoko quietly watches over him, they reach their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary.
Video extras include making-of footage; extended interviews; an event praying for the film's success; its unveiling preview screening; stage greetings celebrating the release; a special collaboration video with Motohiro Hata's Zutto Tsukurikake no Love Song; and teasers, trailers and television spots.
