5 Centimeters per Second Live-Action Standard Blu-ray

Hokuto Matsumura and Mitsuki Takahata star in the first live-action adaptation of a Makoto Shinkai work, directed by filmmaker and photographer Yoshiyuki Okuyama. Eighteen years after the original animated film, 5 Centimeters per Second returns as a story of first love, separation and a promise that continues to shape two lives.

In spring 1991, Takaki and Akari meet at an elementary school in Tokyo. Recognizing each other's loneliness, they gradually grow close, only for Akari to move away when they graduate. Their letters keep the connection alive: each new message reassures them that the other is still within reach. During the winter of their first year of middle school, they reunite in Iwafune, Tochigi, on a night of heavy snow. Beneath a solitary cherry tree, they promise to meet there again on March 26, 2009.

By 2008, Takaki is working in Tokyo and keeping others at a distance. As he approaches thirty, he begins to understand that part of him has remained in the past. Familiar landscapes and the approaching date of their promise stir memories he has never lost. Akari, too, carries those days quietly through her everyday life. Having moved through eighteen years at different speeds, they each turn toward the place that holds their shared memories, while the words they once exchanged continue to bridge the distance between them.

Okuyama, known for his photography, commercials and music videos, makes his first large-scale commercial feature following his independent film At the Bench. Matsumura takes his first solo lead in a film after working with Shinkai on Suzume. Filmed across all four seasons during 2024 and 2025, including locations in Tokyo and Tanegashima, the production recreates the original's landscapes while giving the story a new live-action perspective. Fumiko Suzuki wrote the screenplay and Ayatake Ezaki composed the score. Kenshi Yonezu's theme song "1991" refers both to the year Takaki and Akari meet and to the singer's birth year; Masayoshi Yamazaki's "One more time, One more chance" returns in a remastered, upmixed version.

The ensemble also features Nana Mori, Yuzu Aoki, Mai Kiryu, Yuto Ueda, Noa Shiroyama, Takashi Okabe, Seina Nakata, Kentaro Tamura, Junki Tozuka, Sho Hasumi, Naoki Matayoshi, Keiko Horiuchi, Himi Sato, Ayana Shiramoto, Aoi Miyazaki and Hidetaka Yoshioka. This standard Blu-ray contains the 121-minute film, commercials and trailers on one disc. Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo soundtracks are provided, together with Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio stereo audiodescription. The main feature includes English subtitles and Japanese accessibility subtitles.
