A Fugitive from the Past Negative-Scan 2K Remaster Blu-ray

A typhoon, a murdered family and a ferry disaster set Tomu Uchida's crime drama in motion. On September 20, 1947, a pawnshop family is killed in Iwanai, Hokkaido. Soon afterward a ferry sinks in the storm, claiming 532 passengers, yet the recovered bodies outnumber the passenger list by two. Detective Yumisaka suspects that those unexplained deaths connect the maritime tragedy to the murders.

Ten years later, the suspect has built a respectable life as a successful businessman, while a sex worker who helped him on the night of the crime has never forgotten him. A staged double suicide in Maizuru draws their paths together again and revives the pursuit. Adapted from Tsutomu Mizukami's novel, the film examines poverty, guilt and the struggle between compassion and self-preservation. Uchida's stark visual treatment gives physical form to the shadows within his characters.

Rentaro Mikuni, Ken Takakura, Koji Mitsui, Yoshi Kato, Rinichi Yamamoto, Akiko Kazami, Sadako Sawamura, Susumu Fujita, Sachiko Hidari and Junzaburo Ban lead the ensemble. This Blu-ray presents the 182-minute black-and-white film in a 2K remaster with Japanese mono audio, and includes the trailer.
