Niki, the daughter of a Japanese mother and British father, has left university and hopes to become a writer. She wants to tell the story of her mother Etsuko, who moved from postwar Nagasaki to Britain. Prompted by her daughter, Etsuko begins recalling a summer spent with a woman named Sachiko and Sachiko's young daughter. Niki is moved by the memories, but gradually notices something troubling in the account. As she listens more closely, apparent inconsistencies lead her toward an unexpected truth.
Kei Ishikawa adapts Kazuo Ishiguro's novel into a drama of memory and concealed experience, moving between 1950s Nagasaki and 1980s Britain. Suzu Hirose, Fumi Nikaido and Yo Yoshida lead a cast that also includes Camilla Aiko, Rie Shibata, Daichi Watanabe, Mio Suzuki, Kohei Matsushita and Tomokazu Miura. The film was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
The Blu-ray presents the 123-minute film with its Japanese-and-English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 original soundtrack and a separate Japanese accessibility audio guide in Dolby TrueHD stereo. Japanese translation and accessibility subtitles are available. Supplements include making-of footage, the completion-premiere and release-celebration stage events, and teaser, theatrical and short trailers.
