A scavenger named Rai wanders a war-torn land, stealing from the dead in the depths of the Oboro Forest. When a supernatural encounter offers him a path to the throne, a sword that moves with his tongue turns lies and ambition into bloodshed. Kazuki Nakashima's dark fantasy, directed by Hidenori Inoue, draws on the ruthless rise of Shakespeare's Richard III while joining the speed and force of Gekidan Shinkansen theatre to kabuki performance.
Recorded from the November and December 2024 Shinbashi Enbujo production, this Cinema Kabuki release includes both casts of the central roles. Koshiro Matsumoto and Matsuya Onoe alternate as Rai and Sadamitsu, alongside Tokizo Nakamura, Shingo Bando, Ukon Onoe, Somegoro Ichikawa and Yajuro Bando.
The two-disc set contains the approximately 202-minute Koshiro version and 201-minute Matsuya version. Extras total approximately 124 minutes across the discs and include premiere stage greetings, making-of footage and curtain calls. Both Japanese 5.1 surround and stereo soundtracks are provided; no subtitles are included.
