Exception Original Soundtrack presents 27 tracks filled with Ryuichi Sakamoto's majestic lyricism and ambitious sound. The space-horror science-fiction anime features an original story and script by novelist and filmmaker Hirotaka Adachi, also known as Otsuichi, and character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, known for Final Fantasy.
Sakamoto saw the work as directly confronting questions raised by advances in cloning and genetic engineering: what life means and what humanity is. For the main theme, he wanted the symphonic music that has become a science-fiction film tradition since Star Wars.
For the soundtrack as a whole, he aimed for a dark, ambient sound that would flow as a single musical work, rather than only serving individual scenes. More intense sounds were still used for battles. He described himself as very pleased with the resulting soundtrack.
