Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko Standard Edition Blu-ray

Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko — Standard Edition Blu-ray

Planning and production by Sanma Akashiya, an original novel by Kanako Nishi and animation by STUDIO 4°C! An outstanding voice cast comes together for a moving, heartwarming comedy.

Sanma Akashiya fulfils his wish by planning and producing a theatrical animated film for the first time.

Nikuko and Kikuko are a family of two: mother and daughter. Food-loving, carefree Nikuko is warm-hearted and quick to fall in love, so men easily deceive her. Kikuko, a fifth-grader at a sensitive age, has lately begun to feel a little embarrassed by her mother. They have nothing in common and live together on a boat in a fishing harbour. When their secret comes to light, the most wonderful miracle arrives for them both.

The original work is Kanako Nishi's bestselling novel Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, with more than 350,000 copies in circulation. Nishi won the 152nd Naoki Prize. When Naoki Matayoshi of the comedy duo Peace introduced this book on TV Asahi's Ame Talk! episode devoted to book-loving comedians, it drew a tremendous response.

The person who fell in love with this captivating story and longed to turn it into a theatrical animated film was Sanma Akashiya, one of Japan's most beloved comedy stars. He planned and produced the Netflix drama Jimmy: The True Story of a True Idiot, released in 2018, but this was his first time producing an animated film for theatrical release. Five years after he personally approached author Kanako Nishi about adapting the novel, his wish finally became reality.

Nikuko always gives everything she has, living powerfully with limitless cheerfulness. Her favourite saying is, "Being ordinary is the best!" Yet this mother and daughter, with their own unusual circumstances, are not quite ordinary. Their endearing efforts to live life to the fullest make this heartwarming comedy funny, tearful and quietly encouraging. Sanma Akashiya, whose philosophy is that simply being alive is a windfall, brings energy to audiences throughout Japan through this theatrical animated film.
