Godzilla Minus One Regular Edition Blu-ray
映画 『ゴジラ-1.0』 Blu-ray 通常版
Post-war Japan. From zero to minus. Live, and resist.
Godzilla suddenly appears in a Japan reduced to scorched earth. Can the nameless people left behind find a way to survive and fight back? Takashi Yamazaki directs, writes and creates the visual effects for Godzilla Minus One, the film celebrating Godzilla’s seventieth anniversary. The symbol of despair rises again in the Reiwa era.
A major box-office hit that surpassed 7.45 billion yen, Godzilla Minus One won the Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards. Celebrating seventy years of Japan’s landmark special-effects monster-film series, it is the thirtieth live-action Godzilla film produced in Japan.
Hitmaker Takashi Yamazaki, whose works include the Always: Sunset on Third Street series, The Eternal Zero and Parasyte, handles direction, the screenplay and visual effects. The “-1.0” in the title is read as “Minus One”.
The setting is post-war Japan. The war has left the country a scorched wasteland, stripped of everything and literally reduced to zero. Then Godzilla suddenly appears, dealing another devastating blow. With overwhelming power, he pushes Japan from zero into the negative. The nameless people who survived the war search for a way to live and resist him.
Koichi Shikishima returns from the war only to find that he has lost his parents. Noriko Oishi meets him while bravely surviving alone in the burned-out landscape of post-war Japan.
The film ranked first at the Japanese box office among domestically produced live-action films released in 2023. Following its American release in December 2023, it also led the North American box office among foreign-language films released that year and became the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film ever released in the United States.
Its momentum continued during awards season. At the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize, it received Awards for Excellence in twelve categories, the largest number that year. It then won the Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards, a first for a Japanese film.
Special features include making-of footage, a look at the creation of the visual effects, and the release special Behind the Scenes: No.30 to Iu Mono. Event footage follows the completion announcement, the world-premiere red carpet, the Tokyo International Film Festival’s opening red carpet and closing-screening stage greeting, opening-day stage greetings, the North American premiere and the Sapporo event. The Takashi Yamazaki Selection talk-show series brings together conversations from the Godzilla screenings.
