Stand up to the courtroom—and to injustice. This stirring legal drama follows a woman lawyer as she confronts formidable difficulties.
Based on the American drama The Good Wife, which aired for seven years from 2009, the story brings the acclaimed series’ realism and dramatic developments to a Japanese setting. The original won numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards and attracted worldwide attention, with a Korean remake and a Russian remake announced for 2019.
Kyoko Hasumi returns to legal practice after sixteen years. She left her career when she became a mother, dedicating herself to supporting her elite prosecutor husband, raising their children and protecting their home. When her husband, the head of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office’s Special Investigation Department, is arrested on suspicion of corruption and a scandal involving another woman emerges, her life as a devoted wife changes completely.
With the truth behind the scandal still unclear, Kyoko decides to return to work to protect her children. With help from Tada, a former fellow legal trainee who runs a law firm, she secures a provisional position. Curious public scrutiny of a wife caught in scandal and the immense gap left by sixteen years away from law make every day a struggle. Holding firmly to her beliefs and refusing to give up on herself, she turns even her weaknesses into strength and grows both as a lawyer and as a person.
Sometimes incisive, sometimes humorous, this legal drama portrays a woman whose life has been overturned by betrayal and arrest as she faces adversity through her work. Its characters stand at crossroads, using conviction and pride to carve out their own futures.
Story: Once a promising young lawyer, Kyoko retired after childbirth. She lived happily with her two children and her husband Soichiro, head of the special investigation department. That happiness collapses in an instant when suspicions of corruption and an affair engulf Soichiro. Media coverage of the scandal shaking the legal world intensifies. At a press conference, he denies corruption but admits the relationship and apologises. Nevertheless, he is arrested. Deeply wounded by his betrayal, Kyoko resolves to return to law for her family.
Masahiro Tada, a representative of the Kamiyama Tada Law Office, offers her a helping hand. They trained together, and he once had feelings for her. Apart from those feelings, he values her legal ability and persuades his fellow managing partner Yoshie Kamiyama, who opposes hiring her. The appointment is only provisional: Kyoko must compete with young lawyer Kotaro Asahi for a single permanent position, to be decided six months later.
Her first opponent is the popular presenter Kusakabe. On his internet programme about a little girl who disappeared from a supermarket, he suggested that her mother was probably responsible. Driven to despair by public rumours, the mother took her own life. The father approaches the firm to sue Kusakabe for defamation. Working with Tada, Kyoko faces a case centred on freedom of expression. Together with paralegal Michiru Madoka, she begins investigating evidence that Kusakabe made his claims without checking the facts.
Meanwhile, Wakisaka, the newly appointed head of special investigations, assigns prosecutor Sasaki, a close confidant of Soichiro, to bring him down. Soichiro, however, has a strategy of his own to counter the prosecution.
Extras include a director’s cut of the opening episode, making-of footage, round-table discussions focusing on the lawyers, the prosecutors and both groups together, the Crazy Love promotional video, filming wrap-up footage, the production press conference, complete special videos featuring the performers, outtakes and television spots. A booklet is included.
