GTO Revival Blu-ray
TV GTOリバイバル
Times may change, but I will not. The legendary teacher Eikichi Onizuka returns, taking up a post at a high school full of problems and giving passionate lessons to students burdened by worries.
GTO returns after twenty-six years in a special drama celebrating the sixty-fifth anniversaries of Kansai TV and Fuji TV. The revival grew from the conviction that bringing the story back at this moment would have meaning. Familiar faces return for a one-night reunion, revealing unexpected changes after more than a quarter of a century.
The signature theme POISON returns in a newly arranged version. As the era changes from Heisei to Reiwa, the wealthy become wealthier and the poor become poorer, making everyday life increasingly difficult. Can Onizuka become a new hero for the present generation?
After leaving teaching, Onizuka is asked by his former students to take up a post at the private Sotoku Academy High School. An exposé influencer with nearly two million followers has been causing trouble there. Celebrities and ordinary people alike are investigated, exposed and drawn into online outrage. Many of the school’s teachers and students have already been targeted.
The attacks are so frequent that rumours suggest the person behind the account may be inside the school. Students watch one another’s reactions and go through their days filled with distrust and suspicion.
The school’s vice-principal, Goji Fujiyamada, prefers to avoid trouble. Japanese-history teacher Miyu Ayahara, the homeroom teacher of Class 3-1, believes teachers should not interfere too deeply in students’ lives. Onizuka becomes the class’s assistant homeroom teacher.
Among the students is Suzuka Ichikawa, who presents herself as a model pupil but struggles to get along with her work-obsessed father, with whom she lives. Rin Endo once lived happily with her close-knit parents, until the influencer exposed wrongdoing at her father’s company and it went bankrupt. Haruto Uno entered the school on a baseball recommendation, but an injury ended his ability to play, and his father now insults him every day.
What passionate lessons will the man once known as the Great Teacher offer these troubled students? Can he become the hero that today’s high-school generation needs?
A booklet accompanies the release. The making-of documentary follows the production closely, exploring the reunion with the original series’ familiar faces and their chemistry with the newcomers through previously unseen footage. It traces the road to the revival, the determination behind it and the origins of the chainsaw scene, alongside a special interview recorded after filming. Footage from the production announcement is also included.
