The Boy and the Heron Documentaries

How was the Academy Award-winning The Boy and the Heron created? With an extraordinary seven years of exclusive access, this documentary reveals what was happening inside Studio Ghibli.

Two kinds of “madness” were locked in a struggle. Hayao Miyazaki tries to open the “lid” of his mind and immerse himself in the world of the film. Toshio Suzuki pushes Miyazaki into even greater madness, intent on bringing an unprecedented masterpiece into being. Although the two are “accomplices” in making this film, they lie to deceive one another and smile slyly about it, yet need each other more than anyone else. Their relationship mirrors that of Mahito and the heron, the characters Miyazaki depicts in the film. Reality and imagination: the two embark on a great adventure across these worlds.

As the companions with whom they have made films pass away one after another, how do they try to live through this “twilight”? Is friendship what binds them together, or is it something else…? The answer lies in this visual record.

This complete version adds previously unedited material to the NHK programme The Professionals: Ghibli and Miyazaki’s 2399 Days and re-edits the footage. The original broadcast is also included, offering another way to explore this record of the film’s creation.
