When Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day began broadcasting in 2011, it quickly became a talking point as an anime that made viewers cry. A theatrical version followed in 2013, and the work became a social phenomenon.

Seventeen-year-old Aoi Aioi is in her second year of high school and lives in a town surrounded by mountains. Although she has reached an important moment for deciding her future, she does not study for entrance examinations. Whenever she has free time, she plays her beloved bass, spending every day immersed in music. Her older sister Akane cannot help worrying about her. The sisters lost their parents in an accident thirteen years earlier. Akane, then in her final year of high school, gave up moving to Tokyo with her boyfriend and found work locally. Ever since, she has acted as a parent to Aoi, and the two have lived together on their own.

Aoi feels guilty toward her sister, who has put aside romance and given up so many things to raise her. She feels she has taken freedom away from Akane's life. One day, the celebrated singer Dankichi Nitobe is announced as a guest at the town's music festival. A familiar man's name appears among his backing musicians: Shinnosuke Kanamuro. He is Akane's former boyfriend and the person Aoi admires for teaching her the joy of music. After graduating from high school, he left for Tokyo and lost touch with them. Now Shinnosuke is finally coming home.

Then, just as Aoi learns this, he suddenly appears before her. But this is Shinno: the eighteen-year-old Shinnosuke Kanamuro, still in his high-school form, who has crossed time from the past. After this unexpected reunion, Aoi's admiration for Shinno begins turning into love. Meanwhile, Akane and the present-day Shinnosuke meet again after thirteen years. A bittersweet, mysterious relationship between four people emerges. A second first love begins, connecting the past and the present.

The theme songs are Sora no Aosa wo Shiru Hito yo and Aoi by Aimyon, released through unBORDE/Warner Music Japan.
