In the Garden with a Goat returns to Takato Yamamoto's imaginative world eleven years after Genshoku Nozokimado. Intricately detailed artwork is paired with essays that trace the origins of his imagery and the childhood memories behind it.
Yamamoto describes drawing as a process through which distant, fragmentary memories gradually surface. His reflections turn those images into words, connecting life in Kamakura's wooded valleys with his artistic practice.
Born in Akita in 1960, Yamamoto graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in 1983. Advertising illustration occupied much of his early career; from the early 1990s he developed fiction illustration and original work influenced by ukiyo-e and late-nineteenth-century art. His Heisei Aestheticism style appears across book covers, illustrations and art collections. This Japanese art-and-essay volume is published by Geijutsu Shimbunsha.
