Kondo becomes the new captain after taking over from Igarashi, who led the team to a national championship. In the quarterfinals of the spring invitational, rough play leads to players being ejected. The younger players battle bravely afterward, but the team suffers a narrow defeat. Sumiya No. 2 Junior High has lost a game it could have won. Yet the players have also begun to see results in their long-standing effort to build greater depth, and they throw themselves into training, determined to avenge that loss in the summer tournament!
