Kaleidoscope Garden explores Hiromi Matsuo's retro-modern portraits of women in Japanese and Western clothing. Book-cover and advertising commissions, calendar images and independently published originals draw on fashion and everyday culture from the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods, reshaped through the artist's contemporary interpretation.
Design sections examine page layouts, lettering, typography, patterns, costumes, accessories and furnishings. The artist's explanations connect these choices with the finished illustrations, including cover art and a making-of feature for the Cocoon series.
The newly drawn cover's development is documented from concept to finished image, alongside rough studies of figures, kimono, flowers and plants. An interview explores Matsuo's influences and career. Published by Genkosha, this collection contains 144 pages.
