GeGeGe no Kitaro Animation

The story of Kitaro’s fathers is revealed for the first time. Created to commemorate the centenary of Shigeru Mizuki’s birth, this animated feature is an episode zero for the sixth television anime series and tells the story that leads to Kitaro’s birth. It follows Kitaro’s father and the human Mizuki as they meet and confront their fate together.

Released in 2023 as the centenary film, this new theatrical chapter in the Kitaro series earned acclaim, including an Excellent Animation of the Year award at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize. Drawing on a deep affection for Kitaro and Mizuki’s work, it tells a frightening yet sorrowful love story in a remote mountain village entangled in old customs.

Kitaro and Medama Oyaji enter the ruins of what was once Nakura Village. Medama Oyaji remembers the events that took place there seventy years earlier: his meeting with that man, and the fate they faced together.

It is 1956. Nakura Village is ruled by the Ryuga family, who secretly control Japan’s political and financial circles. Mizuki, an employee of a blood bank, arrives under the pretext of mourning the death of the family head, Tokisada, bearing both ambition and a secret mission. Kitaro’s father also enters the village, searching for his wife.

An ugly struggle over Tokisada’s successor has begun within the Ryuga family. Then one of the family members is brutally murdered at the village shrine. This is the beginning of a terrifying chain of supernatural mysteries.

The meeting and destiny of Kitaro’s fathers: what did the two of them see amid overwhelming despair?
