Makoto Shinkai Storyboard Collection Vol. 4 - Children Who Chase Lost Voices follows the planning of a journey whose young characters each carry a sense of loss. Shinkai drew the film's entire storyboard by hand, and this volume reproduces that complete sequence in full colour, allowing the progression of the story to be followed through the director's own drawings.
An introduction to the film, guidance on reading storyboards and an explanation of terminology help orient the reader before the sequence itself. A new interview adds Shinkai's perspective on the work. At 688 pages, the A5 volume comes in a slipcase and is published by Kadokawa under CoMix Wave Films' supervision.
Born in Nagano in 1973, Shinkai first drew wide attention with Voices of a Distant Star, the 2002 short he made largely on his own. His subsequent films include The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters per Second and The Garden of Words; he has also adapted his own films into novels. This book focuses specifically on the storyboards for Children Who Chase Lost Voices.
