Mom, Is That You? Standard Edition Blu-ray

A story of a new beginning for a mother and son.

This film gives a richly emotional portrait of an ordinary parent and child living in the Reiwa era.

Shochiku celebrated a century of filmmaking in 2020. Throughout that long history, from the Tora-san series onward, it has continued to tell stories of human warmth and families. In 2023, Mom, Is That You? depicts the enduring bond between parent and child in this changing Reiwa era.

Akio Kanzaki, the head of human resources at a major company, is worn down by his daily work. At home, he worries about the prospect of divorce from his wife and his relationship with Mai, his daughter, who is now a university student. After a long absence, he visits the family home in Tokyo’s old downtown district, where his mother Fukue lives. “Hello, Mom.”

But something about the mother who greets him seems different. The woman he remembers in a cooking apron now wears colourful, stylish clothes and lives with renewed energy. She even seems to be in love!

Confused to find that he no longer feels at home in the house he has returned to, Akio encounters neighbours whose warmth borders on meddling and discovers a mother unlike the one he knew. Gradually, he begins to recognise what he has lost sight of.

Following Kabei: Our Mother and Nagasaki: Memories of My Son, this third entry in the mother trilogy is a new film intended to take its place in Japanese cinema history.
