Two years after southview, whose danceable songs explored the idea of lifting the heart, MONKEY MAJIK takes a different direction. Having travelled across Japan on its first tour of all forty-seven prefectures, the band portrays Japan as an enigma through its own perspective: wabi-sabi and hospitality, modernity and classicism, technology and tradition, light and darkness. The country’s opposing and complex attractions become something mysterious and impossible to explain completely, expressed through the group’s distinctive sensibility.

Many of the songs were created around the word enigma. Each member contributed freely, enjoying the unexpected effects of combining their individual ideas. The result is an ambitious work by four musicians whose backgrounds, careers and musical approaches are themselves an enigma.
