My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s Volume 1 Blu-ray

Does this world need a hero or an assassin? The popular fantasy series arrives in an action-filled anime from Sunrise. At the time of its announcement, the original work comprised eleven volumes—five novels and six manga volumes—with more than 1.6 million print and digital copies in circulation in Japan. Its international reach extends across North America, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, France and Russia, with overseas print and digital circulation exceeding 200,000 copies.

The story follows Akira as he grows stronger as an assassin through anguish and inner conflict. Its richly drawn fantasy cast includes an elf heroine who leads the fight herself, a battle-hardened knight commander and a giant cat that transforms into a dragon. Sunrise, known for Mobile Suit Gundam and Code Geass, joins director Nobuyoshi Habara, whose work includes Fafner and Space Battleship Yamato 2202. Action and comedy accompany detailed animation maintained from the first episode to the finale.

The teaser unveiled on February 18, 2025 drew more than 500,000 views and positive comments from around the world. At AnimeJapan 2025 on March 23, tickets for the director-and-cast talk on a 200-person stage were distributed within an hour of the venue opening.

High-school student Akira Oda is summoned to another world together with his classmates. Each student receives extraordinary abilities, while Akira’s naturally inconspicuous presence seems to earn him the ordinary powers of an assassin. Yet his statistics easily surpass even those of the supposedly strongest profession, the hero. Suspicious of the king responsible for the summoning, he conceals his presence and uncovers a conspiracy, only to be framed and forced to flee. Vowing revenge, he escapes into the unexplored depths of a labyrinth, where he encounters the elf girl Amelia. Their meeting begins his journey toward becoming a true assassin.

This first volume contains episodes 1–6, a creditless opening and audio commentaries for episodes 1 and 5. The first discussion brings together the director, the series composition and script writer, and the original work’s editor; the fifth pairs the director with the voices of Akira and Amelia. An illustrated three-sided case accompanies a 16-page booklet featuring a director interview and character introductions, plus two original-animation art cards.
