Night on the Galactic Railroad - Animation Design Materials Expanded Edition documents the making of the 1985 film through character designs, art and background material, staff interviews and the complete storyboards. These production records trace the world of Giovanni and Campanella and the film's adaptation of Kenji Miyazawa's story.
The film draws on Hiroshi Masumura's 1983 manga interpretation, which recast the characters as cats. Directed by Gisaburo Sugii, with a screenplay by Minoru Betsuyaku and music by Haruomi Hosono, it received the Noburo Ofuji Award at the Mainichi Film Awards. Hosono's involvement also marked his first film-score project.
Originally issued by Asahi Sonorama at the time of the film's release, the production book returns here with a newly conducted interview with Sugii that was not in the original edition. This Japanese-language expanded volume is published by Fukkan.com and contains 303 pages.
